Observation details
Two glossy ibises initially spotted by my 10-year-old as we drove past them on our commute home from school. “Mom! Two birds with long legs like herons but black feathers were on that lawn!” I turned around at the first opportunity to drive back by the birds, hoping they were still present. Unfortunately with a car now behind me, I could only slow a little bit, but was immediately struck by the sight of two birds very unlike any I had seen locally before. I turned the car around a second time and parked across the street from the lawn where they were walking and pecking at the grass. We observed them for a minute or two, and I took photos and the video attached so we could look them up in the bird book (Sibley’s) once home. As a very amateur birder I recognized their size and shape as reminiscent of an ibis, so I quickly googled “black ibis” which brought up information for the glossy ibis which I recognized as the bird we observed. The pair of birds eventually flew across the road and landed in a marshy field on the south side of the roadway.
