Observation details
One hanging out with Willets along the creek, like they often do here. A plump shorebird, about 2/3 the size of Willets. A medium-length sandpiper-like straight dark bill. In prealternate molt, with several patterned orange-black-white feathers coming into the back amidst the plain gray feathers, a rich orange red (darker than the orange of Dowitchers) over most of its underparts and face, finely streaked crown. Dark legs. Second bird in salt pan, looked more or less the same, but maybe slightly more advanced molt. (I don't see a reason to assert that two birds seen at different locations and times must be the same individual when the species is a regular migrant)
