Observation details
Scarce in county despite local abundance at suitable saltmarsh habitat nearby, with essentially all records involving birds passing overhead in active migratory flight. Just a handful of these sightings have been documented at Randall’s Island, with the species only added to the cumulative patch list less than two years ago. This flock was observed in the traditional context, headed west at fairly low altitude over the Rock Garden west of the defunct driving range. Dark-plumaged wading birds, superficially similar to cormorants at a glance but showing long, decurved bills and lengthy, trailing legs. Flew with more dynamic trajectory as well, gliding frequently on bowed wings as they made their way towards Manhattan airspace
