Observation details
Adult. Large woodpecker with completely red head, black upper wings/back, white chest and stomach, and large white patches on the lower wings. Foraging a few feet from the fenced area of the Coast Guard station, in the trees right on the dunes overlooking the bay. It saw me first and flushed, giving me two brief looks as it swivelled around tree trunks to glance at me before disappearing completely (presumably into the Coast Guard station since I couldn’t relocate it in any accessible areas). A couple of bad photos are attached. I originally thought this might have been the Jackson Woods bird that had moved north, but that bird is still present in its original location, has less red on the head, and is apparently far more cooperative for viewing/photos.
