Observation details
**Continuing awesome bird seen a few times times following large ships around the Upper New York Bay, apparently feeding in the disturbed waters of their wakes with huge concentrations of gulls and terns. Watched it fly south following the Staten Island ferry for a minute or two, then turn around and fly back towards The Battery before settling on the water. Before I left I picked it up almost even with the pier, by the Bayonne docks. Enormous pelican, all white with black remiges, huge orange bill with breeding horn visible at its closest point. Wingbeats impossibly slow at times, but impressively powerful and fast when trailing ships. While I was watching it follow behind the Staten Island ferry, I noticed that some nonbirders were observing it from the stern and taking cell phone photos of it. Perhaps they’re better than my photos:
