Observation details
Rarity first reported yesterday by Wes Thompson. I took the ferry from Manhattan and as we were about 2/3 of the way across, I spotted it first in NJ waters floating not terribly far from the ferry. Before I could get my camera on it, the bird took off and flew right by the side of the ferry before crossing over to NY side! (Attached photos are from NJ side) Unmistakable. Large chunky white bird with black wing tips and huge unusually-shaped yellow bill.
