Observation details
Reports of this hybrid combination go back to 1988 when a mixed pair was noted at a nest in Ricardo, Texas. The first presumed hybrid (nicknamed "Smudgy") was seen in 1998. Since then several presumed hybrids have been seen at Bentson Rio Grande SP and elsewhere in the area where the two overlap. Audubon's Oriole is increasingly scarce in Texas while Altamira Oriole has been increasing. It has been suggested that these presumed hybrids may be the consequence of lack of mate choice by Audubon's Orioles. The two species are not particularly closely related although they are both American Orioles in the genus "Icterus." Reference: Patrikeev et al. 2008.
