Observation details
Slender medium-sized herons, blue-gray head and back revealing markings of burnt sienna on its neck and chest with a white belly and white under its wings, long slim dark bill. After the American Bittern flew into the tree, one of the Tricolored Herons took its place on an elevated patch of reeds. I watched as the heron hunted, thrusting its dagger-like bill into the shallow water. When I lowered the binoculars, a second heron revealed itself a few meters away. Poorly taken photo using cellphone and bins attached. Lifer! Thanks to the birders who pointed this out earlier this week.
