Observation details
Bird first seen by Jane Mirick as it flew past us at Seal Rocks in Rye. As it flew past, we thought it would continue, but it landed on Concord Point. There it stayed for over an hour as we got the word out and many people saw it. It spontaneously flew off, heading south and out of sight. Apparently re-sighted by Mike Resch and others at Plaice Cove rocks where it stayed for a while. Then apparently seen south of bridge in Hampton? Possibly the same bird that had spent several days off Prout's Neck in Scarborough, Maine. Appears to be an advanced one year old or perhaps close to 2 years old. Comments regarding age by Louis Bevier: Hi Steve, Good point about age, but I had looked at that and still think it is older than 1 year. It may be closer to two-years old given the pale stripe on the ventral side of the pouch. I also couldn't eliminate a Caribbean bird, and those nest over a wider range of months. If 23 months, then it fits peak of East coast nesters. But again a wide range of variation. I was mainly suggesting age based on comparison to specimens in Schreiber. He did note how variable timing of change is. The few things that are tied to older birds, i.e. 12-24 months, are the acquisition of white in the head, more lanceolate coverts and scapulars, and the color changes to the gular pouch. That seems like a late hatching/fledge date for birds in US? BNA suggests egg dates of May to early September in Maryland and mid-March to July in North Carolina. In Florida, egg dates are December to June. > > ...........Steve
