Observation details
Eastern Whip-poor-will reported by Tristan Uchida at around 11am this morning. I arrived at 11:40am and as I walked into the park, the bird flew right over me and landed in a tree. My immediate reaction was that this bird looked like a falcon, with long pointed wings. As it sat in the tree, I took a quick photo through my binoculars (attached). I went to my car to get my scope to get a better look and when I returned, it flew. Over the next hour the bird would get mobbed by jays/blackbirds and fly over us to go to the next tree before getting chased again. I noted that this bird was large, and lacked obvious white corners on its tail. It seems that this bird could be a Chuck-will’s-widow, but better photos/flight photos/audible confirmation are definitely needed to make the call.
