Observation details
Large tern with heavy red bill first spotted at 3:14 P.M. We observed it for 42 minutes and watched it dive for fish unsuccessfully ten times before coming up with a fish on its 11th dive. That is approximately one dive attempt every 4 minutes. During the observation period we saw it vocalize and tussle with an immature Ring-billed Gull and also a Fish Crow when they got in its way while fishing. After finally coming up with a fish at 3:56 P.M. it promptly gulped it down and immediately flew to a higher elevation and headed south out of view. Far more enjoyable experience than the quick flyovers at Wertheim.
