Observation details
Heard giving loud distinct calls from tree tops & soon seen around 8:40, from the trail along the stream approximately here: 34.6690285, -106.4589424. Stunning contrasting red and black bird with flashes of white in tail and wings. Moving often, but staying in this general area during my initial observation—by the stream with mostly pines & oaks and a few additional deciduous trees present. This location has good underbrush with overall excellent habitat for this species. The bird was nearly constantly vocalizing. Photographs and audio recording obtained. On descent down the trail a few hours later, I relocated it in a slightly different area a little further down trail: 34.6685906, -106.4593941, feeding on insects, still vocalizing repeatedly, in junipers in mixed flock with YRWAs, BTYWs. First Torrance county record.
