Observation details
Perched distantly on power line structure. Many observers. Google Maps seems to show woodlands and a dry wash or seasonally wet stream to the west where the bird was perched. Digiscope photo by others can be found here: https://macaulaylibrary.org/asset/617681380. Poor snapshot from a digi-video Carl took is attached. Beaudouin's Snake-Eagle was considered at the time. Carl's comments: Not entirely sure of ID. The presence of a yellow cere suggests it's not a Beaudouin's Snake-Eagle. To my eye, this was a largely brown raptor with a yellow cere, big pale-yellowish eye, and a puffy head like snake-eagle photos I've studied. In the scope, impression was of a gray-hooded raptor (which seems to line up with the lousy snapshot attached here), paler brown below, and warm brown above from nape to upperparts. Legs, undertail coverts, much of upperparts, and tail were obscured. Bird seemed to show a white throat sharply demarcated by gray face and perhaps edged(?) by black lines on throat sides but this fieldmark does not stand out very well in our photos. Hint of a dusky upper breast band. Looked for barring along sides of breast and belly and noticed none. Wings warm brown, the shoulders of which looked sharply outlined by either shadows or thin lines of darker feathers? From snapshot, probably a shadow.
