Observation details
Heard only, singing, across the trail from the covered reservoir along the northwest side of the loop. It seemed to be in a stand of small, shrubby oaks, around (37.4146, -122.1814), or possibly in a patch of poison oak shrubs nearby. When I (ACB) first heard it, I thought it might be a Lazuli Bunting, based on its choppy phrasing and sweet, warber-like quality. But as I focused on the song and listened to it several more times, I realized that it sounded like a Nashville Warbler, with a distinct alternating pattern followed by some jumbled lower notes at the end. It stuck to this same two-parted song pattern repeatedly, with little or no variation in song phrasing. We stopped and listened for a while, and though we heard it several more times, we never managed to see it, as it was too far from the trail to give us much of a chance.
