Red-winged Blackbird cowbird alarm whistle misidentified as Tufted Titmouse
Observation details
The males here are mimicking the Yellow Warbler alarm call for Brown-headed cowbirds. This is a higher and more steady toned whistle than their normal aerial predator call. There were 4 female cowbirds perched in the tops of trees scoping out nesting activity of other species. The males flew around the cowbirds and 3 of them left. Here is a link to an audio clip that describes the research proving that the red-sings do understand the specific cowbird call of the Yellow Warbler - https://www.scientificamerican.com/podcast/episode/red-winged-blackbirds-understand-yellow-warbler-alarms/
