Observation details
Holy cow! Lifer. I thought I found one last year but my audio recording was faint and it couldn’t be confirmed. I studied the species and continued looking early last summer but never found it again. That said, last year’s preparation came in handy tonight when one started clearly and loudly calling. It was in a tree in front of the houses just west of the field. It was so intense and perfect sounding I wondered if someone was playing a recording of one. Then it flew across the field and went into the trees right above the parking area and called more. Definitely a real bird. Absolutely gobsmacked at my luck. First heard at 8:39 pm and last heard making ‘whip’ calls at 8:50pm. Would have stayed longer and listened more but it was dark and 2 cars of people showed up (the park closes at dark). Will add audio recordings.
