Observation details
Short-billed Dowitcher in prealternate molt showing the following marks in favor of hendersoni: - expansive blush of largely unmarked orange to the cheek, throat, neck and breast (caurinus typically shows fine specking of black in these areas) - neatly spaced spotting down the sides and flanks (caurinus is typically more extensively and randomly marked on the sides with chevrons and bars) - pale fringes to lower scapulars appear thick (see pic 4) (caurinus tend thinner in this respect) This bird was among a group of 6 SBDO that made a series of tu tu tu vocalizations as they flew around the inlet pond. Long-billed, which can be ruled out by other field marks (very short bill, loral angle, etc.) would show barring along the upper flanks. Last picture shows two caurinus.
