Observation details
The same breeding plumage bird with worn and gray wing coverts. Today I saw the underwings, which were largely white. The lateral upper and under tail coverts are barred; the rectrices are plain gray. The rufous patch on the auriculars broadens posteriorly forming a narrow triangle. There is some rufous wash in the lores and across base of forehead at the base of the bill. I also noticed deep rufous extending as a line from the lateral sides of the crown extending posteriorly around the back of the head. The scapulars are black with broad white notches at the tips. The tip of the bill bulges slightly forming a blob-like tip. This also catches water forming a drop at the tip and enhancing the bulbous tip.
