Observation details
Drifting from western side of tracks (Hurstville region) over to east (Kogarah region). Large raptors each showing features of juvenile and immature birds including very large obvious white panel formed by bases of primary flight feathers, very thin trailing dark edge to secondaries and dark tips to tail feathers. Under tail coverts showing rufous colouration. Posterior half of ventral surfaces similarly rufous while anterior showing a paler tone, and streaking, as for immature. Six obvious dark “fingers” on each wing. Smallish head and small, pale feet. Leading edge of underwing - secondary coverts - similarly rufous with mottled flecks of white. Throat, chin and head/crown off-white - more toward adult plumage (and ruling out rogue Black-breasted Buzzard, another species with such prominent white panels at base of primaries).
