Observation details
Continuing/returning male found by Jim and Matt providing long scope views as it foraged and preened, at one point standing up in shallow water. Consistently dark chocolate coloration throughout upper and lower parts, with neatly chevroned pattern of buffy edges, sharply contrasting the pale face with thin green crown and eye stripe and olive bill. Undertail and tail appeared dark. Blue speculum had a bit of green iridescence bordered by thin white stripes (very nice comparison with several side-by-side eclipsed male Mallards towards the end of our observation which showed bluer speculums and thicker white bordering stripes). Likely the same male at this same location August 2021 (https://ebird.org/checklist/S93298107) and potentially even winter 2018-2019 (https://ebird.org/checklist/S51068306, https://ebird.org/checklist/S52286803). Viewed from (32.64692, -116.93057) after parking in the small parking area to the north. Multiple photos by various observers. A female, probably also a Mexican Duck is listed for now as Mexican/Mallard.
