Observation details
Difficult to photograph; it usually stays within dense tangles very high up in mature forest. You can see it with bins, but the tangles make it impossible for a camera to focus on. I finally lucked out getting one low on the one sunny morning we had in the forest. Wish I'd been able to get it in profile or with the sun on its back; it's got truly spectacular plumage -- while it superficially resembles a black-throated blue warbler, it has a metallic royal blue back and crown that shimmers in sunlight. Worth the extra time to get it just right; unfortunately I found this individual near the end of our visit when I had to drive back to Tokyo.
