Observation details
Flushed downriver by a PEFA at around 3:10 PM. All the dowitchers landed on a large exposed sand bar on the Riley side. Photos taken while bird was straddling the county border in the river. Description from Pott checklist side: "In the photos it is the furthest bird in the flock. SBDO mixed in with flock of 7 other close LBDO and stayed consistent with 3 other LBDO for direct comparison. I was checking the close group for any dowitchers that stood out and noticed this bird had more spotted around the upper flank (close to the bend in the wing when the bird is standing); differing from LBDO as their flecking tends to be more barred than spotted. I was curious about this bird and watched it for a while. Though I never got a picture of it, the bird stretched its wings up at one point and had dark, barred tertials, and a barred lower leading edge of the wing; differing from the pale underwing seen in LBDO. It wasn't until reviewing my photos that I realized the bird was slightly smaller and more slender than the surrounding LBDO. Watched bird until PEFA spooked birds further down toward the river."
