Observation details
Remarkable rarity, only the second documented record for New York State. Handsome male with near peak breeding plumage, only a few lingering patches of molting brown. Brilliant sky blue head and upperparts, toasty orange-buff breast, and clean white belly. Bold white wingbars were the most striking field mark at a distance, especially the extra thick bar across the median coverts. Silvery bill contrasted smartly with limited black mask. Kept us waiting for roughly 45 minutes, but eventually came in and paused in the treetops before making its way to the feeders. Noshed on seeds alongside House Sparrows, a House Finch, and a Rose-breasted Grosbeak. Departed to the southeast after eating its fill. Special thanks to the homeowners for getting the word out and being so welcoming to the crush of guests, and to everyone who helped facilitate the spread of information about this sighting
