Observation details
Great find by Laurie Gilman as it was foraging in her yard which is adjacent to the fields at the entrance to Chandler Brook Preserve. Thanks to Louis Bevier for forwarding Laurie's original report of NSHR. We searched unsuccessfully for the bird around these fields for ~50 minutes before walking some of the trails, only to find the bird back in Laurie's yard, visible from the trailhead. From there it was pretty active, using short perches on both sides of the dirt road. We last saw it around 6:50 after it had moved across North Road and was past the horse farm on the west side of the road. ***For anyone looking tomorrow, the best place to look is from the dirt road accessing Chandler Brook Preserve; park at the trailhead. From there, we observed it using perches on all sides, including the posts along the road. DO NOT go into the fields, which are private property. Smaller than NSHRs that I'm used to seeing, with a cuter look thanks to the big head and petit bill. Thick black mask, with black extending over the bill.
