Observation details
This accipiter was perched in a willow at the mouth of Fishers Gulch; its smallish size, squarish tail, and neck-less rounded head with centrally located eye and small bill suggested Sharp-shinned Hawk; scope views also showed distinct whitish eyebrow combined with dark surround of eye supporting that ID; however, it wasn't going anywhere and I wanted a view of the underparts, and so drove around to other side for possible scope views, but was unsuccessful... I continued with my survey and let this one go until I again looked at my digiscope photos at home; I thought it was a juvenile in field (yellow eye/brown plumage with streaked crown) and still think so, but the eye color appears more orange to me now (thought it was just yellow in field...); however, the raptor book (Wheeler 2003) states that the first prebasic molt from juvenile to subadult or adult occurs from mid-May to November (Basic 1 plumage is acquired when the birds are one year old), so its a juvenile...
