Observation details
A huge surprise here! Very rare in Santa Clara County along the immediate bayshore (~12th record in eBird), and a first for Palo Alto Baylands in eBird. Presumably migrating through the area. Initially spotted at 11:47 AM while biking from the San Francisquito Creek Mouth to the Lucy Evans Center. The bird was in shrubs at 37.459583,-122.111785, and mainly flew between a large green bush on the channel side of the trail and the bare tree right next to it (though it also flew to the airport side of the trail at one point). I later saw it at 12:04 PM while biking back towards the creek mouth, and saw it a third and final time at 12:27 PM with Matthew Dodder, who confirmed the ID. Silent, overall gray empidonax with a short thin bill and an overall small/petite appearance. No tail movements were noted, although the bird did flick its wings occasionally. Thanks to Matthew Dodder for helping with the ID of this bird!
