Observation details
The strange sparrow in the attached photos was feeding in front of the back photo blind with Chipping Sparrows, though it seemed reluctant to come into the open, and for the most part remained (as a nearby Green-tailed Towhee did) under vegetation. The bird was about the size of a Chipping Sparrow, perhaps a bit larger, and its back and wings resembled a Chipping Sparrow's in their patterns, though they may have been less brown in tone. The front end of the bird was entirely different, with a white bib bordered in black, a face with confused black markings, and a crown that was brown at the back (and like a Chipping Sparrow's crown in color) and gray, white, and black in front. I thought at first that the bird might have been a wet Chipping Sparrow, but I had trouble seeing how even a thorough soaking could create such a look. I will post some other photos when I'm able to return to my computer, which is temporarily out of service. (I'm writing on April 21, adding to a list originally submitted on April 12.)
