Media notes
Presumed male had been excavating this hole for some time before flying to the perch behind the tree and calling. The female then flew in, checked in the hole, and lightly tapped the tree before flying off again. This behavior is described in Birds of the World: "Male apparently selects sites and the female may tap around the prospective nest cavity, possibly signaling her approval of the nest site (Short 1982)" Harsh lighting and slow focus tracking here, but I think a compelling documentation of nesting behavior. At least two other RHWO can be heard calling from other areas.
Observation details
Excavating a nesting cavity. Later joined by its partner while two other birds were heard calling from separate locations.
