Observation details
Single flock that flew in from the E and landed in the big open grown doug fir in Gary's yard at 37.0629210, -122.1191499. I watched 12 of them that were visible on the S side of the tree, mostly males but at least 4 females, none streaked at all. They fed on something in the foliar bud tips and in last year's needles just behind the bud tips, but the food item seemed small and I could not identify it. They were clearly probing and parting the needles and some opened their bills quite a bit while parting the needles. They all spent some time just perched doing nothing and a few never fed. This tree has only 4 attached old cones but the new needles have opened and the bud scales are just hugging the bases of the needles. They flew off to the WNW and disappeared into the doug fir forest by Empire Grade. Calls in flight were all clearly type 2. Unfortunately I was still experimenting with this recording equipment, so the recording is awful. I am familiar with this call type and other possible ones here.
