Observation details
Male Junco seen feeding in grasses 10-15 feet south of southern fence. Gray head/breast with black lores contrasting with ivory bill. Belly white. Rufous back/mantle distinctive. Late for any Juncos on the coast, and any other than Slate-colored are virtually unheard of in Galveston County. Identified as Gray-headed based on rufous mantle and white underparts. Lack of buffy coloration on flanks eliminates Pink-sided and Oregon. First Galveston County record (as far as I can tell) of this form. The only other non-Slate-colored ssp for which I can find documentation in the county is of an Oregon-type window collision (Oct. 22, 1998 Indian Beach).
