Observation details
First reported as a hybrid RNSA x YBSA but review of photos seems to suggest a RNSA. Red cap and throat and large wing patch indicate a sapsucker. The bird had a small but visible red patch on the nape, two rows of white lines on the back rather than the more extensive white on the YBSA, large red throat patch with large black border broken toward the bill. There was a very faint yellow wash on the breast and belly. I don’t know if any of these features suggest a hybrid. Observed at the top of the hill in the Garry oaks near the water reservoir.
