Observation details
Adult male. Deep, blue Cardinalidae foraging for seeds in high clover. About the size of a European Starling, all blue, except rust colored wings, and black lores. The bird has a hefty bill perfectly designed for crushing seeds. Observed on ground and flying into trees. At times, while foraging in deep clover, held wings open, possibly helping it to stay on top of clover, which was taller than the bird. Some people have concerns that it may be ill or injured, but both times I saw it (this observation and an evening obs not eBirded) it seemed active, foraging and flying. Seen on the 4th street side of 80 First Ave (later obs: seen from the walkway between 3rd and 4th street at 60 First Ave). Great find by Carolyn R. Ruled out Indigo Bunting by overall size, size of bill, reddish wingbars, and quality of blue coloring.
