Observation details
Sorry, it's a terrible point-and-shoot photograph. First of all overall shape, large head and short tail make it a Sternula and rule out any Sterna. Furthermore, the bright yellow bill with a black tip as well as the black outermost primary (p10) are typical of LT. Finally the sharply demarcated white forehead contrasting to an eye-line that continues through the lores to the base of the bill (in addition to the deep black outermost primary, p10) would rule out NZ Fairy Tern. This bird is an adult Little Tern. A first winter Little Tern was nearby. Neither of the Little Terns were banded, while all three NZ Fairy Terns were banded.
