Observation details
***Very rare. Amazing find by Jeff Gramm - thank you Jeff!!!! Seen in the vicinity of the boathouse, at two different staircases - first here (40.6956272, -73.9993070), then here (40.6958648, -73.9990055). Went missing for forty minutes or so following a photographer stampede; returned to the original location some time later. Usually skulky but early on actually hopped up to the top of a bush and sang to the bewildered crowd. Continued to sing quietly on occasion and also let out a few interesting flight calls. Seen among a crowd of birders including many friends - good to see everybody leave happy after the bird seemingly gave us all the slip. Please be mindful that this bird is a somewhat skittish - it’s as active when foraging as any other warbler, and it will reveal itself to you with some patience. A crowd of people shifting and jockeying for the best angle seems more apt to push the bird around than to yield good views. Photos
