Observation details
I was making dinner in the kitchen with the windows open bc it was really warm, when around 8:48pm I heard the unmistakable song of a Whip-poor-will coming from the ravine out back. Immediately dropped everything i was doing, sprinted out back and listened. Sure enough it fired back up quickly. To my astonishment, the Whip actually moved in closer to my house and i think it perched on the fence no less than 15 feet away singing loudly and clearly. Unfortunately my neighbor's German Shepherd started barking loudly and not only ruined what would have been incredible audio, but also spooked the Whip. Thankfully it retreated to the trees in the ravine and fired right back up and i was able to get a decent recording. Absolutely incredible experience to get a Whip-poor-will singing proudly for a little over ten solid minutes in my back yard. A real treat and possibly the highlight of this spring migration for me. Yard Bird #117!
