Observation details
Feeding by itself in rocky intertidal on south side of east Java Islet. Small sandpiper with yellow legs, black blotches on belly, and speckly plumage on back and wings with reddish highlights on scapulars and upper coverts. Lighter plumage around face, nape, and throat, except for distinct large dark auricular patch and dark area in lores. Darker crown with slight reddish highlights. Black patch on belly appeared incomplete, more black blotches rather than one large patch, so possibly still molting into breeding plumage. Bill not long enough for a Dunlin, plus yellow legs unlike Dunlin. Photos by Michael M Barrett and Linda Archer. We also viewed Rock Sandpipers at Java Islets on 4/13/16 (eBird checklist S29303493).
