Observation details
female hanging out in close association with long-tailed ducks. The birds were very actively feeding for a while and then drifted further off shore. After studying for a while, our initial ID in the field was a female surf scoter. However, on reviewing the photos, the feathering down the side of the bill creating a somewhat smiling appearance, and indistinct whitish patch forming more of line from behind the eye instead of a discrete patch seemed more consistent with female kind eider. I ran some photos by local ebird reviewer Zach Schwartz-Weinstein and he concurred. sorry this report is now a few days old. The birds were observed in the channel near the boat launch off of sabin dr.
