Observation details
This obvious dark lored White-crowned Sparrow stood out from the other two gambelli White-crowneds present. This is most likely a "Mountain" White-crowned Sparrow rather than the similar dark lored nominate race. Besides this being in California the very dark reddish bill and heavy black lores points to the oriantha race over the leucophrys race. Dark lored birds are rare on the valley floor and this seems rather early for an oriantha spring migrant.
