Observation details

Continuing Thick- billed alcid. Very cooperative in this atypical location and late date. Weather was very cooperative as well allowing for some nice photo captures. Appears to be a young bird and seems to be doing well finding enough food to maintain energy level. This was determined by the frequency in which it dove for feeding, at times non stop. The pattern seemed to be an active patrol of the coast line with short stays at the surface followed by longer dives, often re-emerging quite a distance from where it first dove. The bird would rest and preen toward the middle of the river never near the area it would feed during our observation. The locals were enjoying this rarity as much as the birders and was a nice moment to see as they were as curious as we were in seeing the bird.
