Observation details

Stakeout from yesterday. Bird flew into woods minutes before I arrived. After some time I saw it fly out of the trees behind the house with white wooden fence. All dark buteo, proportionally long, candle tipped shaped, wings unlike RTHA. Four fingered dark primaries contrast with brown back from above, long primary projection, dark eye-line. Will course low over the ground like a harrier and we watched it stoop several times for prey. Bare legs, small bill, plain dark un-banded tail viewed from above. Breast is heavily mottled with dark brown splotches. Caught and ate a vole at least twice that I saw. We enjoyed many long views of this bird, sometimes flying very close. When it would perch in a tree it could be almost impossible to pick out as the brown coloration is great camouflage against the tree bark.
