Observation details
**Exceptional and new county high. Previous high was 13, but notably included only 8 adults and their offspring. That record was from Children’s Island, the largest known prior breeding population in the county. Indeed, this harbor -bearing resemblance to the boston harbor island system- is the only consistent breeding season location for them in the region. Other than that particularly high count with fledglings, the highest counts are 3-5. Additionally almost all the mass coastal high counts are postseason (aug-sep). The first group was a flock of 8, traveling briskly from south of kettle all the way north over the cape shore. Then later a group of 4 following the same path, and then a very distant pair. Finally, during one of my passes of kettle’s shoreline, a pair was washing and preening in the rocks, where a pair has bred historically.
