Observation details
All adults. The first one we saw was descending from high above to not far above our heads. Then it made a sharp bank, collapsed its wings as if going into a stoop, looked up, and shot straight up like a rocket. It must’ve sensed some type of quick rising column of air. We have never seen a bird shoot straight up in this position. It must’ve remained tucked and continuing to ascend for at least three or four seconds. Then it spread its wings and started to soar, still rising. It was an extraordinary sight.
