Observation details
Difficult i.d. especially on a silent, solitary bird, but after doing measurements comparing bill length to head length, and noting the general slightness of the bill especially at the base together with our general sense that this was a smaller tringa, we’re unable to convince ourselves that this is a Greater Yellowlegs, the more likely species at this date. This is a very early date for Lesser, but also in favor of the smaller species is the freshwater context and, reputedly, the confiding nature of the bird, which allowed us to take the quite good photos (especially by my standards) attached below.
