Observation details
*Overdue lifer. Tried many times to see this bird the last time I was in Alaska to no avail. Was hiking down the powerline trail when I heard some ptarmigan clucking off to my left, near a stunted spruce grove at the edge of a steep hillside. After a bit of investigating (postholing in my tennis shoes), I found a male walking along the edge of the hillside foraging on willows. I then swung around to get better looks and found the pair slowly moving downslope through the willows. There were more fresh ptarmigan tracks on this hillside so probably at least 3-4 birds total in the area.
