Observation details
What a bird! Large plover-like thing with tan upperparts and collar, black forehead and breast band, vivd red eyes, white belly, and pink legs. Thick white forehead band and disconnect between black throat and breast band for subspecies (as well as the group expanding northwards). Continuing in pond in northeast corner of the course during this entire observation. Bird appeared to be very successfully hunting for worms primarily along the wet mud edges of the pond. Viewed from the dirt/grass road along the north side of the course after parking on W 14th street (northeast corner of golf course). Two notes for lapwing chasers- Second, I briefly spoke with a staff member at the course and he didn't seem to have issues with people birding from the levee along the east side of the course or from the dirt/grass road along the north side of the course (which has been the best viewing location this morning as the bird was in that large pond in the northeast corner of the course, happily foraging on worms). Parking is along the side of the road on West 14th street, east of the golf course. If you want to enter the golf course though and/or if the bird isn't in that northeast pond, please park at the main entrance to the course and check in with the office. It sounds like they are OK with birders walking on as long as they aren't getting in the way of golfers or at risk of getting hit with a ball. Please remember to be on your best behavior so that birders don't lose access when chasing yet another crazy valley rarity.
