Observation details
Mega first reported yesterday by Cecilia Dumois. First seen at about 7:20 with a group of birders about 200 yards down the Australian Pines Trail at East Beach. Later moved down to where the trail meets the beach trail. Many observers present. Relatively small flycatcher. The size, small bill, lack of back streaking, extensive black below the eye, and minimal rufous on the tail all seem to point to this bird being Piratic rather than variegated, but there is still some discussion on the subject. Extensively photographed and seen by tons of people. What an amazing bird to have so close to home!!
