Observation details
One of John’s hoped-for birds on this trip. How amazing to see not one, but two - a pair actively nesting, vocal, and interacting. As one left the nest it circled about 30 feet over our heads three times. Later as we were at the observation deck we saw the pair fly by at and below eye level, and as they were flying very close to turkey vultures it allowed us a chance for a studied real-life comparison of the two species - which are incredibly similar in flight, even when seen at close range. An amazing experience for us both. Also note that in the audio at 3:14 you can hear the bird take off from the nest (with a good scream); after that there are some squeaks and chups that continue until the end of the recording that the bird made as it circled above us.
