Long-billed Curlew in flight. Pastorius Reservoir, La Plata county, CO. 900 Hz high pass filter added to knock down wind noise.
Observation details
Shorebird with long decurved bi-colored bill: pinkish underneath and dark on top. Plumage on breast and flanks was a buffy/cinnamon color. Cinnamon colored underwing-lining. Crown was heavily streaked with dark brown and lacked striping. Neck and throat showed dark brown streaking. Light grey legs. Vocalization matched LBCU. Photos and audio provided. At first this was a slightly confusing ID (initially thought could be a Whimbrel) because the size of the bill was smaller than seen on LBCU previous years. Body size was not substantially larger than neighboring FRGU. Cornell Lab's Birds of the World mentions that the bills on males are shorter than the bills on females (139mm vs 170mm), and that bodies of males are smaller than bodies of females. Continued observation showed all birds had similar colorations on body and underwings that matched with LBCU. Vocalizations matched LBCU (have previously recorded LBCU). Birds eventually flew from shore (allowing positive observation of underwing lining) to a field and joined nine other LBCU (totaling 19 observed).
