Capturing part of the flock
Observation details
Ridiculous. As I was getting out of the car, I saw what I thought was the entire flock of roosting gulls take off and head SW, as they usually do. There were still some stragglers on the water when I got to the lake... to my surprise, the majority had dark backs. 29 adult black-backed gulls were on the water with HERG and RBGU. Most of the BBG were roughly the same size as the HERG; three adults looked bigger, but not big enough to be GBBG. Was there a GBBG - either ad or imm - mixed in? Probably. Better luck next time... There were likely young LBBG in this flock, but I didn't spend time on them before they all took off (exactly at 7:00). The true count of LBBG was likely in the thirties.
