Observation details
Additional comments 4/19/24: reviewer suggested a small Canada was best for this species and I tend to agree, and want to especially note that in the field, regardless of what "foreshortening" or other gobbledygook-type justifications are used by experts when viewing pictures, it was obvious that this bird was WAY SMALLER THAN ALL THE OTHER CANADA GEESE I'VE EVER SEEN, which is probably tens of thousands of geese. Looked through many ebird pictures and canadensis group has many photos which resemble this bird, although they are in general much larger and larger-billed than this individual. Although I'm not really satisfied with the "canadensis group" ID, I'm even less satisfied with any of the subspecies of cackling goose, as this bird definitely does NOT appear to have a blocky head. Additional comments 4/11/24: After studying the pictures and guides, the head appears too blocky and not rounded enough to be a true cackling goose, but also appears way too small to be a regular Canada. Maybe a Richardson's form of Cackling would be the closest to this goose which was not hanging around with any other Geese, but loosely associating with a Coot. Original comments: Pics tba. Very small Canada-like goose, not much bigger than coot in pic with it. Appeared to have steep sloped forehead. Feedback appreciated.
